This is the story of Bailey (formerly known as Gentle Ben) that was rescued by the ANNA Shelter in July 2008.
The thought of owning a dog (let alone a Saint Bernard) hadn’t really crossed our minds until one Friday evening when we saw a cute, cuddly, happy 2yr old Saint Bernard on WJET 24’s Jet Pets. We joked around with each other about going to get him all weekend long. The more we looked at his photo on the website, the more our curious we grew. So we went to visit him at the shelter and initially we were taken back by his immense size. He was so sad and his fur was matted. He was the only dog that wasn’t barking. This huge, sad-eyed Saint Bernard was just waiting for us to take him home. I don’t know why, but we just knew this was the one. He was classified as a
“Special needs” dog and we felt we had something to offer him: a good home and a loving family. But the truth is, we are the ones who have received so much more. Bailey arrived at our house and was a completely different dog than we remembered at the shelter. He was running around, full of energy and loving all of the attention and affection. Our first night with him was a little rough. He must have felt so frightened that we had to wait until he was completely asleep to go to upstairs to bed ourselves. We didn’t know at that point if he was housebroken or not. If he was going to chew up our furniture, clothes, etc. It turns outs all of our fears were false. The next day Bailey got into his comfort zone and has been a joy ever since. We had to get him a very short haircut and within a few months his coat was back to normal. He is so well behaved and people are naturally drawn to him. Bailey’s favorite activities are long car rides, walks, belly rubs, laying on everyone’s feet, going to the beach and all of the fast food restaurant drive-thru’s. We just can’t remember what things we like before he came to us, he is truly special.

You probably remember me as Cocoa...I was tied with my sister to the dumpster outside your building Christmas Eve. My new name is Molly and I am in love with my new home! My Mom spoils me (and I let her) and teaches me all kinds of new things. I am told I am really smart...after all I learned that my Mom's bed was MY bed the first day I came here! I have been to the Vet and had shots and got spayed, and I still like them there! They LOVE me also. I have all sorts of people and toys to play with. My 'Aunt" comes to get her "Molly fix" every couple of days and Grandma and I have a special bond. My birds are annoyed with me sometimes, but they are gonna love me one day! I am very thankful to all of you at the A.N.N.A. Shelter for finding me so that I could have a long and happy, healthy life with my new Mom! |

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to update you on Shelby's new life. She has been very
busy in the last 9 months. She still loves to play frisbee and fetch
and is a great working dog (likes to pull sleds, carry firewood, etc).
She also still loves car rides and goes for one almost every day. But
the best news of all is that she has been certified a "canine good
citizen" by the AKC and has become a "therapy dog" with Therapy Dog
United! She fits in so well, it's almost like she has always been a
part of our family. Anyway, we can't thank you enough!
